How Not to Grow Herbs

December 5, 2009 § Leave a comment

After a month of growing herbs in my kitchen, I now feel confident in offering advice on how not to grow herbs:

1- Don’t grow them in your kitchen window because the light is not sufficient.  This means that your plants get ‘leggy’, (this terminology I’ve stumbled across in gardening sites) that as best I can tell means you plants are more stems than leaves.  Notice how my plants are all tall and leaning?

2- Don’t haphazardly move you plants around in an attempt to get them better light. The plants end up growing rather wavy.

3-Or maybe don’t try to grow plants in the fall in Western Washington. It turns out that sunshine is rather scarce here.

4- Don’t use pots without drainage holes. It turns out that one the most common mistakes that people make in growing plants indoors is over-watering them.
